What You See Shapes Your World

There are a zillion ways to say this, “You are what you eat.” included, and although it’s well known, it’s amazing how many times I have to be reminded!

Here’s a little example of a very small way I’ve been reminded of this:

My husband and I love Kevin Morby. We’ve paid 3 times to see him in concert and even our toddler can recognize his songs. When we lived in Chicago, there was a street fest at the end of our street- West Fest for any Chicagoans reading this – and we saw Kevin Morby was playing it.

This is a FREE show and all we had to do was walk down the block. We planned to get there early, we were so pumped! We show up and the majority of the crowd is at the opposite stage, basically at a rave.

In our minds, the stars had aligned to bring one of our favorite artists down the street for free. Surely, everyone in Chicago would have that on their calendar! Then we realized, “Oh, right. Just because WE’RE really into him, doesn’t mean everyone else is.”

Our world view is made up of what we see on our feed, the shows we watch, the podcasts we listen to, and the thoughts we have about what is going on around us It's up to you to shape that to how you want to feel.

What we put in front of our face is what we perceive reality.

Think of how often a screen is in your face. No judgment, it’s just what life is! What you click on is what you see more of. Who you follow becomes what is recommended.

If you’re feeling bad about your body, what type of bodies are you consistently seeing? A curated feed, no doubt! What if you filled your feed with a huge variety of body types? Add in nature and quotes? How much less do you think you would obsess over your physique if you deleted all of the fitness accounts you follow?

Look at your thoughts, like what goes through your head when you hit traffic. If you see it as something that ruins your day, has conspired against you, you’re going to be in a funk a LOT. Or, can you think, “This sucks” take a deep breath and call a friend or put a podcast on?

The world will reflect back what you focus on. It’s up to you to shape that to how you want to feel.

I’m going to be honest, this is way easier said than done. You can believe what I’m saying, agree with it in theory and feel on board when reading it, but, what happens tomorrow when you’re in traffic? When you scroll Instagram and feel your mood shift?

There isn’t a 5 step plan to change how you see the world. It’s being able to show up every day and make the decision again and again to feel happy and spread joy.
