A Simple System to End Spiraling Thoughts
If there is one thing I hear from every single client, it’s that their mind often goes haywire with spiraling thoughts. There’s a lot of “what if’s” happening that never find a solution and it’s making us anxious and annoyed. Sound like you?
I want to share a simple 2 question system that will get you out of that spiral.
Actually, let me back up because I can’t ignore awareness. It is the first thing you’re going to have to get good at. You need to be able to start recognizing, “Oooh I think I’m going in circles here.” If you need a little help or refresher, click on this: How to Use Awareness to Find True Alignment
But back to that simple system:
Ask yourself, “Is there something constructive I can do about this, or am I just working myself into a spiral?” Obviously, you’re going to need to be honest with yourself. Are you caught up in a ton of feelings or is there action that is possible?
This will go one of two ways. If there is something constructive or actionable, you can do, what is that thing? This may not be obvious instantly, but if you are able to recognize action can be taken, you will stop spiraling and start solution seeking. How exciting for you!
If it’s just a spiral of worry with nothing you can do, here are two questions to pose to yourself:
- What would it be like to not have this thought?
- Is there a different thought I can think to get out of this loop?
The key here, again, is that you have to be honest with yourself. When it is in your brain, you are the only one who can make a change.
Remember, your thoughts produce feelings that create what you experience. Change your thoughts and the rest changes along with it.
